Choosing Your Chiropractic Techniques: A Guide to Long-Term Success

One common question that students frequently pose to me is about the abundance of chiropractic techniques available. As they attend various technique classes, the opportunity to learn 5, 10, 15, or even 25 different techniques emerges throughout their chiropractic career. The diversity in techniques is truly remarkable, considering that the primary goal remains consistent – getting the job done for different patients with varying needs.

In our office, we embrace this diversity by having a bucket of techniques, including Thompson, Diversified, and Activator, among others. The key is to tailor our approach to each patient, ensuring they receive the specific care that aligns with their unique requirements. Different doctors may have different strengths, but the fundamental principle is delivering results.

Here’s my advice to aspiring chiropractors facing the multitude of techniques:

1. Define Your Identity

Ask yourself, “What do you want to be known for in the community?” Whether it’s being recognized as a NUCCA guide, a full spine expert, or specializing in a particular technique, your identity in the community matters. This way, when someone refers to a chiropractor, they’ll associate you with your specific expertise.

2. Consider Your Body and Practice

Evaluate which techniques align best with your body size, muscle mass, and the treatment time you envision. Some techniques may take longer, requiring appropriate pricing to maintain a sustainable practice financially. Your treatment time should harmonize with the value you provide and what you feel comfortable charging.

3. Choose What Brings Long-Term Joy

Think about what you genuinely enjoy doing for the next 25 or 30 years. While certain techniques might seem exciting initially, consider their sustainability over the long term. What brings you joy and satisfaction consistently? Identifying techniques that align with your passion ensures a fulfilling and enduring chiropractic journey.

As you make these decisions, keep in mind that your physical abilities may change over time. What works seamlessly in your 20s might need adjustments as you reach your 50s or 60s. Therefore, it’s crucial to choose techniques that accommodate your body’s evolution throughout your career.

In conclusion, your choice of chiropractic techniques shapes your professional identity, influences your practice’s financial sustainability, and impacts your long-term satisfaction. Define your identity, consider the practical aspects of your body and practice, and choose techniques that bring you joy for decades to come.
