Beyond “Where”: A Shift in Perspective for Future Chiropractors

As a chiropractic educator, I often encounter students wrestling with the question, “Where do I want to practice?” However, I’ve come to realize that maybe this isn’t the most crucial question they should be asking themselves as they embark on their journey into the professional world. Instead, I want to propose a shift in focus towards another question “Who do I want to become?”

In his book, “Who Not How,” Dan Sullivan emphasizes the importance of surrounding yourself with people who contribute to personal and professional growth. These are the people who not only assist us in our goals but also inspire us to reach greater heights. It’s about aligning ourselves with mentors and peers who challenge us to excel in areas where we may currently fall short.

While the question of “where” does have some significance, particularly in the first stages of your career, it’s not quite as important later down the line. Consider this scenario: if offered the opportunity to learn from a renowned figure in your field, such as Jerry Bruckheimer in film production, would you prioritize the location over the invaluable knowledge and experience being offered? Most aspiring professionals would immediately say no.

So, why then do we as chiropractors fixate on the starting point rather than the desired destination? Perhaps it’s because we underestimate the importance of envisioning who we want to become. If our aspirations outstrip the confines of our current surroundings, it may be a sign that our vision is too narrow.

In my experience, I’ve found that exposure to diverse practice settings and mentorship styles is valuable in shaping one’s professional identity. Whether it’s learning the intricacies of running a multi-doctor practice or honing the skills required for running your own, each experience contributes to our growth and destination.

It’s often said that our income and happiness are reflections of the people we surround ourselves with. Therefore, it matters to be intentional not only on where we want to be but also on who we want to become along the way. Take a moment to consider the individuals you admire and aspire to emulate. These are the mentors, colleagues, and friends who will play a pivotal role in shaping your journey.

So, I invite you to reflect on where you want to be and who you aspire to become in your chiropractic career.

Wishing you a fulfilling road ahead.
